"This year's GFMBO winner was Jenny Swift, who enjoyed her prize of a gluten free afternoon tea last month! Her winning creation, “Tickle Your Tastebuds – A Trio of Flavours”, won her the delicious prize of gluten free afternoon tea at the lovely 2 Oxford Place in Leeds. Jenny was kind enough to write up a guest blog about her day, and it sounds like she had a fantastic time!
I have been really excited and couldn’t wait for this weekend ever since I won Delicious Alchemy’s Gluten Free Magic Bake Off 2015. Part of the prize included afternoon tea at 2 Oxford Place which is the same place I went to the day I got engaged in March this year, so it holds some lovely memories for me. It is so handy to get to as it is situated in Leeds city centre, a short 5 minute walk from the train station. This restaurant serves 100% gluten free food - a coeliac’s paradise! It was so lovely to be able to go into a restaurant and be able to eat without the worry of wondering ‘has there been any cross-contamination in the kitchen?’ or ‘is this going to make me ill?’
2 Oxford Place pride themselves on serving absolutely delicious food and providing excellent service - the staff are so friendly and attentive the whole time. My companion for the day was my fiancé, who also really enjoyed the food and said that you couldn’t even tell that it was gluten free. The bread is baked on-site daily and was soft and fluffy with a lovely texture. 2 Oxford Place is very cosy and gives you a homely feeling as soon as you walk in. We didn’t eat before arriving so we had big appetites for what awaited us.
We were served a three-tiered savoury platter, the selection of sandwiches including cucumber with Irish butter on white bread, smoked salmon paté with lemon and dill on brown bread, egg mayonnaise with chives on brown bread and cheddar cheese with red onion marmalade on white bread. We also had a slice of quiche each and some cheese bites which were delicious. There was a pot of peppermint tea to accompany our sandwiches which was very refreshing.
Our eyes lit up when we saw the three-tiered dessert platter come out full of goodies, as we both have a sweet tooth! The array of cakes included mini lemon & poppyseed sponge cakes, chocolate brownies, bakewell tarts, pavlovas, chocolate truffles as well as freshly baked scones (both sultana and double chocolate) served with butter, strawberry preserve and cornish clotted cream! My favourite were the chocolate scones which were still warm and tasted amazing! We were so full up mid-way through that the staff kindly boxed up the remainder of our cakes for us to take away.
It was a very indulgent Saturday afternoon and we enjoyed every minute of it. I would highly recommend that people take their friends and family for whatever occasion you choose as you won’t be disappointed.
Hands up who fancies afternoon tea after that! Congratulations again to Jenny, we're so glad you enjoyed your prize. Thank you to 2 Oxford Place for providing a wonderful prize!
The GFMBO will be back next summer if you wish to take part and try your hand at a gluten free bake! Stay tuned as we'll be releasing Jenny's winning recipe in the next few weeks."
