Coeliac Awareness Week 2017 Day 7: Date & Sunflower Seed Granola by Beth Heddle

Today marks the end of Coeliac Awareness Week, an annual celebration of all things gluten free run by the wonderful charity Coeliac UK. This year, we’ve been celebrating with a new blog or recipe every day!

The fantastic foodie & fitness blogger Beth Heddle has created a delicious new recipe using our Gluten & Dairy Free Oats – introducing her Date & Sunflower Seed Granola! Simply scroll down for the recipe – it’s easier than you might think!

“I’ll admit, granola is a weakness of mine. I’ll eat it for breakfast, snack on it mid-morning and top greek yogurt and fruit with it for dessert. If there’s no tub of fresh granola in the house it’s probably because I’m ill.

Deliciously Alchemy make two amazing granolas, a nut and seed one and a berry one (if you’ve not tried these you’re missing out!!). This granola takes after the nut and seed one but combines the sweet taste of delicious dates with the nuts to give a crunchy but divine flavour.”

Coeliac Awareness Week 2017 Day 5: Staying Fit on a Gluten Free Diet

Blogger and passionate runner Beth Heddle knows a thing or two about staying fit on a gluten free diet. To help us celebrate Coeliac Awareness Week, she’s put together some brilliant tips on how to balance your diet with fitness or training…

Beth Heddle on Staying Fit while Gluten Free

As a coeliac, there aren’t really any reasons why you shouldn’t be able to exercise like anyone else. Coeliacs do however often suffer from a weakened immune system which increases your susceptibility to catching viruses and generally feeing unwell. A few ways I love to keep fit include jogging, walking, spinning classes and cycling outdoors. They’re all relatively cheap and don’t require much expertise – especially as a student these are appealing methods of exercise.

One thing I struggle with being a coeliac is the small range of ‘healthy’ snack bars available for coeliacs. After exercise I often have to drive home or go on somewhere else and therefore having a snack bar would be so convenient. There are a few that I have come across that have a great protein and carbohydrate ratio post-workout but you can so simply make your own! A simple mix of mashed dates, oats, nuts, seeds, dried fruit and honey baked for 10 minutes or so work perfectly!

Coeliac Awareness Week 2017 Day 2: DIY No Cook Rice Milk & Oat Milk

For Day 2 of our Coeliac Awareness Week celebrations, we’re showing you just how easy it is to make delicious dairy free milk alternatives at home, that also don’t contain gluten, nuts, or any other major allergen.

More and more of us are choosing dairy free milks, and they are now easier than ever to find in your local supermarket – but they’re not always cheap. Here’s how you can make your own in minutes for less than 90p a litre.

Rice milk has a deliciously subtle nutty flavour and is perfect on cereal. We love using Delicious Alchemy Rice Flakes in this recipe as there is no previous soaking or cooking necessary – you’re ready to go in seconds. Add a touch of vanilla extract for a sophisticated taste.

Oat milk has a stronger, oaty taste and is also delicious with the addition of vanilla or cinnamon.

Delicious Alchemy’s Gluten Free Charity: Live on BBC Radio Sheffield

Our Founder Emma Killilea went live on BBC Radio Sheffield this week to raise awareness of the The Delicious Alchemy Charitable Foundation.

As a coeliac, Emma is passionate about helping improve the lives of people on restricted diets – day by day. The Foundation will help to achieve this aim by donating gluten free food to UK food banks supported by the Trussell Trust, and helping research programmes and other charities improve the lives of those on free from diets.

Our first fundraising project for the Foundation is almost at its end – we are raising funds to create the ultimate gluten free guide book to help those on restricted diets adjust to their new lifestyle. ‘Goodbye Gluten, Hello Delicious’ is being written by Emma, and we need YOUR help to make it happen! The DA Challenge : A gluten free week experience

As a rite of passage at Delicious Alchemy, we like everyone to complete a ‘gluten free week’ so they can experience a free from diet first hand.  In this latest blog post, our newest recruit shares her experience of going gluten free…

Upon joining Delicious Alchemy, I was briefed that I must complete a gluten free week. I was slightly apprehensive as I’m still learning about what foods do & don’t contain gluten – but I was mainly curious to see what options I could find.

I’m not a big breakfast person, so gluten free breakfasts weren’t too much of a worry. I was mostly nervous about what I would do for lunch – as someone who tends to rush around a lot, convenience is a very important factor in my diet.  Also, my biggest weakness is bread which I knew would be a challenge. Although there are gluten free bread alternatives out there, I wasn’t sure how they’d compare…
